Tata Steel provides Tourist Boats to the Fishermen Community of Kharinasi, Gahirmatha Area
Gahirmatha comes in the peripheral region of Dhamra Port, a joint venture (JV) between Tata Steel and L&T. As part of its CSR activities, Tata steel provided three tourist boats to the fishermen community of Kharinasi area in the Kendarapara district.
The tourist boats were handed over to Mr.Narayan Chandra Haldar, President of ‘Jay Jagannath Primary Marine Fishermen Cooperative Society’ and Orissa Traditional Fish Workers’ Union (OTFWU) free of cost on June 23, 2010. Mr.Mohit Das (Head,Corporate Affairs, Tata Steel, Orissa) presented the boats on behalf of Tata Steel.
These boats are meant to provide means of alternative livelihood to the fishermen community. This will benefit around 30 to 40 fishermen families in the area. It may be noted, these fishermen face a difficult time from November to March every year when fishing is banned by the State Government due to mass nesting of the Olive Ridley turtles in this region.
Tata Steel has always endeavoured to improve the quality of life of people in and around its project areas. From the days of its inception, the Company has been sensitive to needs of the community and locations in which it operates, adhering to its principles of responsible corporate citizenship. The Company aims to take a proactive role in local and national development.
Tata Steel, keen to improve the quality of life of the fishermen communities living in the areas surrounding Dhamara Port region, decided to provide them some means of alternative income generation that would not be different from their traditional livelihood resources. Thus, the tourist boats provided to the fishermen in the area will be a means of transportation from Kharinasi to Hukitula Island.
Mr. K. Aleya (Secretary), Mr. Prasanna Kumar Behera (Vice-president) and Mr. A Ganesh Rao, executive member of OTFWU participated in the programme and thanked Tata Steel for its efforts in providing sustainable livelihood to the poor fishermen community of the area.
