Ongoing sustainability programs at Gahirmatha

Alternative Means of Livelihood

The activities carried out by Tata Steel at Gahirmatha Area encompass social, economic, environmental and cultural dimensions. The activities are geared towards creating a sustainable community in the region around. The report projects all the actions that have been already undertaken and the ones to be started shortly. Groundwork for the projects has been done already. The activities integrate effectiveness along with sustainability. ‘Effectiveness’ is in terms of benefiting people and for the long term.

The following table provides activity components being classified under the program heads, i.e.—Income Generation, Health and Hygiene and Empowerment with forecasted degree of Sustainability.

The major components of the programs (Income Generation & Empowerment and Health & Hygiene) have been critically assessed against three parameters:

  • Sustainability of impact - whether the activity leads to a permanent solution for the problem/results in the self-reliance of the beneficiaries or not

  • Benefit of the community as a whole - whether the activity promotes community based development approach or benefits a handful of individuals

  • Benefit of the needy - How much the activity benefits the really needy ones.
