Orissa is a rich treasure land of exquisite bio-diversity. In consultation with the IUCN and other Indian Environment conservation agencies, DPCL is committed to protect the vast ecological environs of Orissa. The port construction is being carried in tandem with the protocols issued by the IUCN team after numerous visits and on-site talks with the dredging engineers.

DPCL understands the need for protecting the environment along with the economic growth propelled by the construction of the port. Together with the IUCN, it has taken a number of vital steps to ensure improved development of the port as well as ecological balance. Some of these are:

»  Land Pollution
  • The floor of the storage area & the collecting drains shall be of Plain Cement Concrete (P.C.C) with an impermeable layer such as Polythene sheets below it.

  • The slope of the floor shall be 1:80 to enable easy flow of spillage oil in to the collecting drain.

  • The spillage oil in the drain shall be collected and sent for recycling or disposal as per local regulations.

»  Waste Management

(A) Non-hazardous Waste management

  • Uncontaminated hard waste such as dirt, bricks, concrete etc. shall be disposed in a municipal solid waste landfill or suitable disposal location identified by the client.
  • The hardened concrete and bricks may be used as clean fill material at site, if possible.
  • Refuse bins shall be placed at conspicuous locations at site.
  • Waste shall be stored at a designated place at site.

(B) Hazardous Materials

  • When any hazardous substance is procured, used, stored, or disposed, Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the substance shall be available at the work site.
  • Hazardous waste needs to be disposed according to recommendations of material safety data sheet or as per local regulations.

(C) Dust control

  • After water is sprayed on the roads at regular intervals to minimize dust due to vehicular movement and wind blowing.
  • Prior to commencement of construction activities like Demolition, Crushing, Chipping etc., water is sprayed in small quantities to control dust.
  • Dumpers carrying excavated soils shall be covered with polythene sheets to avoid dust due to high velocity air currents during transportation.

(D) Emission Control

The height of the exhaust pipe of the Diesel Generator Sets shall be as per Central Pollution Control Board norms, the extract of which is given below.

The minimum height of stack to be provided with each generator set can be worked out using the following formula:

H = h + 0.2 x (KVA)
H = Total height of stack in meter
h = Height of the building in meters where the generator set is installed
KVA = Total generator capacity of the set in KVA

(E) Noise Control

  • Diesel Generator Sets shall be isolated from human occupancy and provided with Mufflers
  • Earth moving equipment and vehicle shall be provided with muffler for suppressing noise
  • Earplug / Earmuff shall be used when noise level increases 85 dB (A)
