DPCL is truly committed to the cause of the environment and would be having a sound Environment Management Plan (EMP). This plan would be pursuant to global standards and will be implemented with the guidance of IUCN (www.iucn.org). The EMP would be having stringent measures to monitor the ambient atmospheric parameters to ensure that none of these parameters exceed the prescribed limits.
Lighting
Stringent measures would be taken to ensure that lighting doesn’t spill over to off shore waters. IDA (International Dark Sky Association) parameters would be implemented to ensure the same.
Ballast
Ballast discharge is another primary source of concern and DPCL would be following the MARPOL (Marine Pollution Regulation & Legislation against Pollution Control) guidelines as well as the International Ballast Convention. This convention is of paramount importance to DPCL due to sensitive marine ecology and marine life in the immediate neighbourhood of the port. The convention provides an exchange of clean ballast of the ship after testing of the water parameters by the port authority prior to pumping the same in to the port waters.
Dredging
Dredging and turtle safety has been a thorny issue, and the Port of Brisbane has pioneered in this respect. Guidelines for safe dredging would be implemented during the implementation phase.
Maintenance Dredging would be undertaken only in the non – nesting season of the turtles. In addition, reclamation dredging would be done only in the offshore areas, away from the Dhamra river mouth.
Safety & Security Practices in port
In addition ISGOTT (International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers & Terminals) would be followed by the DPCL. While the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Safety Code) would also be implemented. |
