Dhamra is one of the most ancient ports on the eastern coast of India strategically located between Haldia and Paradip, north of the river Dhamra in Orissa. The port is all set to become one of the largest Deep Water Ports in India once constructed.
Greenpeace has put allegation on DPCL, that the building and construction of the port has led to gross environmental damage leading to the prevention of nesting of the most vulnerable marine species – the Olive Ridley Turtle to nearby Gahirmatha (where turtle nesting has been common over the years). However, this year all apprehensions have been proved wrong when about 1.7 lakhs of turtles nested here at Gahirmatha in March 2009. It has proved once more that the ongoing work at the port is not the cause of turtles not migrating in the region.
